How Do You Get to Shirahama from Tokyo and Osaka?

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to reach the beach and hot spring town of Shirahama in southern Wakayama Prefecture. It covers the direct flights from Tokyo Haneda, the overnight bus from the Tokyo area, the limited express train from Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, and the local buses once you arrive.

We used the airport's own timetable, the bus company's pages, the West Japan Railway train status page and the prefecture's official tourism site. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Timetables change, so treat the times below as a snapshot and check them again before you book.

By air from Tokyo Haneda

Shirahama has its own airport. Its Japanese-language site now calls it Kumano Shirahama Resort Airport, and the prefecture's English pages still use the older name Nanki Shirahama Airport. The airport site lists Japan Airlines as the scheduled carrier on the Haneda route.

For 1 September to 24 October 2026, the site lists three flights a day in each direction. From Tokyo, flights leave at 07:45, 11:30 and 16:30, with arrivals at 08:55, 12:40 and 17:40. From Shirahama, flights leave at 09:30, 13:45 and 18:25 and arrive about an hour and ten minutes later.

The timetable changes on 25 October 2026 and runs to 4 January 2027, with slightly different times. The airport says to check the operating status on the airline's own site. The airport itself operates from 08:30 to 20:00, and the terminal building is open from 08:00 to 18:45.

The airport says it is building up its local transport network. Its access page lists highway buses to Kushimoto, Nachi Katsuura, Kumano Kodo trailheads and Shingu, as well as buses toward Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo. It also lists local buses, taxis with a map and fare table, rental electric cars and a booked door-to-door shuttle within about 6 km of the airport. The shuttle needs a reservation by 17:00 the day before.

The airport also says a trial airport connection bus runs from 24 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. It links the airport with main points in nearby towns and is timed to scheduled flights. Check the airport page for the stops.

By overnight bus from Tokyo

Meiko Bus runs an overnight highway bus between Tokyo and the Shirahama and Tanabe area. Its page says fares start at 9,600 yen from Yokohama or Tokyo, and that Wi-Fi and power outlets are available on its own vehicles. The timetable we read was revised on 1 April 2025.

In that timetable, the bus leaves the Shirahama area in the evening around 19:15 and calls at several stops, including the airport, the Shirahama bus center and the Toretore market. In the other direction it leaves the Tokyo side at night and reaches Shirahama in the morning. The company also warns that some highway bus trips are suspended, so check the live notice before you plan around it.

The company also runs an Osaka line. The Osaka timetable page we read was dated October 2022, so we do not repeat its times here.

By train from Kyoto and Shin-Osaka

West Japan Railway lists the Kuroshio limited express as the train that serves Wakayama, Shirahama and Shingu, running to and from Kyoto and Shin-Osaka. Its train status page showed normal service when we read it on 4 October 2026 at 16:58. We did not confirm the travel time or the fare, so look them up in a route planner.

Wakayama Prefecture's tourism site has a route search for getting to the prefecture. It lists Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Nagoya stations, Kansai International Airport and Haneda Airport as starting points. One of its destinations is Nanki Shirahama Airport.

By car

The prefecture's pages give the same driving advice for most Shirahama sights. From the Nanki-Tanabe interchange on the Hanwa Expressway, take National Route 42 and then prefectural roads 33 and 31. It says that is about 12 km to the beach area, and about 15 km to Sandanbeki cliffs and the Saki-no-Yu hot spring.

Local buses and taxis in Shirahama

The prefecture says Shirarahama Beach is about 10 minutes by car or taxi from JR Shirahama Station. Engetsuto Island is reached by taking the loop bus from the station and getting off at the Rinkai stop. For the Saki-no-Yu hot spring, take a Meiko bus to the Yuzaki stop and walk three minutes.

Meiko Bus says the direct trip from Shirahama Station to Adventure World takes 8 minutes and costs 300 yen. It asks passengers boarding at the station to buy a bus ticket at the ticket counter first, because paying on board slows the bus. If the counter is closed, pay when you get off.
