What Is Shirarahama Beach, and When Does the Swimming Season Start?
This guide is for visitors who want to know what Shirarahama Beach is like, when its swimming season opens, and what else to see along the same coast. It covers the beach itself, the sunset spot at Engetsuto Island, the Sandanbeki cliffs and the Saki-no-Yu hot spring.
We used the English pages of Visit Wakayama, the official tourism site of Wakayama Prefecture, together with the airport and bus pages for directions. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. The prefecture says facility information can change, so check each facility's own site for the latest details.
What Shirarahama Beach is
Shirarahama is a white sand beach in Shirahama Town. The prefecture says it is about 640 meters long and calls it the sister beach of Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. Its address is listed as Shirarahama, Shirahama Town, in the Nishimuro district of Wakayama.
The prefecture's story page calls it a favorite spot for sunbathers and swimmers and describes the sand as sparkling white. It also describes the beach as touted as the best beach in Kansai, the south-central part of Japan. That is the prefecture's own wording, and we have not compared it with other beaches.
When the swimming season opens
Visit Wakayama lists a Shirarahama Beach Opening event on May 3 each year. It says the climate here is comparatively warm for Honshu, and that the beach is famous for the earliest-starting swimming season on Honshu. It adds that the beach is lined with sun umbrellas made of palm leaves in summer, which creates a tropical mood.
The prefecture's story page says the official Japanese beach season begins every year at Shirarahama, before any other beach on Honshu. We could not find a closing date on these pages, nor any rule about which hours lifeguards are on duty. Ask at your lodging or at the tourist office before you swim, and read the flags and signs on the sand.
If you visit now, in early October, the opening date has long passed and the beach is outside the season described above. We found no official statement about October water conditions, so we do not give one.
How to get to the beach
The prefecture says the beach is about 10 minutes by car or taxi from JR Shirahama Station. From the Nanki-Tanabe interchange on the Hanwa Expressway, it says to take National Route 42 and prefectural roads 33 and 31 for about 12 km. For flights and trains, see our guide to getting to Shirahama.
Engetsuto Island at sunset
Visit Wakayama calls Engetsuto Island the symbol of Shirahama. It says the island is renowned for its arch, and that it is the Kansai region's foremost spot for viewing sunsets. The prefecture's story page calls it an iconic symbol of the Kii Peninsula and a perfect spot to watch the sunset.
To get there from JR Shirahama Station, take the loop bus and get off at the Rinkai stop. By car, the route is the same as for the beach, about 12 km from the Nanki-Tanabe interchange. We found no entry fee or opening hours for the viewing area, so we say nothing about them.
Sandanbeki and the sea cliffs
The prefecture's story page describes the Sandanbeki rock cliffs as craggy and 50 meters high, facing the Pacific Ocean. It treats them, together with Engetsuto, as part of the area's rock formations and sea views. We did not read a separate official page for Sandanbeki, so we do not give opening hours or fees for the cave or the lift there.
Saki-no-Yu, the sea-facing hot spring
Visit Wakayama says Saki-no-Yu is said to be the oldest onsen in Japan, and that its open-air baths look out over the Pacific Ocean. It says you can feel the spray from the waves on the rocks. The story page adds that the onsen has more than 14 centuries of history.
The listing gives the opening hours as 08:00 to 17:00, and 08:00 to 18:00 in May, June and September. It says the bath is closed on Wednesday. From JR Shirahama Station, take the Meiko bus to the Yuzaki stop and walk three minutes. Hours can change, so check before you go.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- The closing date of the swimming season and lifeguard hours.
- Fees and hours at Sandanbeki and Engetsuto.
- Any October water temperature or safety statement for the beach.
- Fees at the Saki-no-Yu bath.
We name no hotels or shops, because the prefecture's lists of nearby lodgings are not an endorsement we can check.
